If you have strong views on what activities and groups of users need to be consulted about the future of the park, then please contact: ken.burlton@btinternet.com (Clissold Users' Group newsletter)
He was director in charge of Hackney's parks in the days when most people agree some of the errh 'least' was done to them and if we got the story right he was also the director who had reported to him the fact that individuals were not 'serving local people' but were in fact loading monuments into white vans (from Kent) in Abney Park. This was the 1990s and they were turning up in auction rooms nearby and he was told how to do something about stopping it. Ever been in the Dolphin on Mare Street? He often seems to be open-space consultant of choice for Hackney but the reports do seem to be a while coming - we never did hang around long enough to get the one on the marshes on the bedside table. We wonder if anyone who worked for him is still at Maurice Bishop and still involved with open-space. Hey do you remember when George and 'Tiger' put 75-tons of goose-shit out of the oxbow on the roots of the horse chestnuts in the deer enclosure - they died, we laughed (as he poured us another one)!
not all bad news though:
A sports brief has been agreed including a new sports hall and improved swimming pools following advice from consultant Ken Burlton.

So the Bandstand has gone - we hear that there was an attempt to ask if schoolchildren could take it away F.O.C. for Hackney Council but they were told, "no way". The pursuit of a Green Flag for the park meant that the money was found though - we hear that plans for the design of the new bandstand are progressing swimmingly. We should also mention that we did notice that the paddling pool was open over the bank holiday - so that's a hundred percent better record than last year when the council managed to have the paddling pool closed on every bank holiday weekend.

They are cutting and placing drains in the spring field on Clissold Park which is great. This is only 19 years after Arthur Disney and the late Christine Disney asked for this. All those years ago the Clissold Park Users' Group was chaired by none other than Mark Lushington. Arthur predicted back then that the lack of drainage on a field full of springs where fairs and contractors parked so close to the trees would see off all the mature chestnut trees there which has, of course, happened. All this despite parks managers and the tree officer accusing Arthur of exaggeration and scaremongering since 1986. have you noticed where the drainage contractors are parking now while the works are taking place?

Local architects Brady Mallalieu are up for RIBA awards for the theatre/bandstand they did for the London Borough of Hillingdon and that is now sitting in Barra Hall Park.
