Thames Water made a presentation at the meeting about their plans to dig a pipeline across the Park (diagonal from Green Lanes/Church Street junction to QEW gate at Grazebrook Road.) Work will start in September and involve a 20 metre wide working area which will be fenced off and eventually reinstated. The work itself will take 10 weeks or so but the reinstatement will take much longer.
This will obviously have a great impact on the Park, in the short and the longer term, although we are assured that trees will be safe and the ground and appearance made good to a high standard. However, they are thinking they may use seed rather than turf in the reinstatement … takes far longer but be cheaper… but as it was pointed out, the costs of going through the Park are considerably less than if the pipeline went along the road… Trees will be cared for in line with guidelines and TW undertook to have the work checked and followed up by an independent environmental agency. Great emphasis was placed by those present on the fact that this is an ancient and highly valued Park and that we demand that trees and other environmental and aesthetic features are treated with respect and care.
The reason for the pipeline is to drain water from new boreholes into the East Reservoir as part of TW project to reduce the rising water table in London. [Just as well the reservoir is still there then isn’t it! Many thanks to the Save the Reservoirs campaign!!!] And we hope that Thames Water will thank the local community for the use of our Park [as well as for that long, hard and ultimately largely successful campaign], by fixing the land drains in the Park and refurbishing our paddling pool. It was put to the people from Thames Water that these gestures would help a lot in their efforts to get the community on board about this pipeline. Action: Ken and Penny to be in contact with Thames Water.
TW are also interested in having the opportunity to be in touch with local schools for educational projects – any interested parties get in touch with Andrea Riding at TW 07747 642044. The user group is looking forward to a positive working relationship with Thames Water. Come to the next meeting to hear more (28th June)
